The department of local government and housing in Limpopo provided 16 houses to destitute families during the current 16 Days of Activism against Women and Children Abuse.
The houses were given to women who were victims of abuse. The women are all from the Greater Tubatse municipality in the Sekhukhune district. The beneficiaries were also found to have been living below the poverty line.
Each of the houses was built at a cost of R60000 and consists of two bedrooms, a lounge, kitchen and an outside toilet.
The department's spokesman, Clayson Monyela, said the move to hand over the houses to the women was in line with honouring and supporting the 16 Days of Activism against Women and Children Abuse.
One of the ecstatic beneficiaries, Madipheta Maria Sekgobela, said: "I am delighted to have a house of my own. I always thought I would only have a house of my own if I won the lottery.
"But now that I own a house without having won the lottery first, I call this department 'Lotto' because it has changed my life for the better - in the way Lotto changes people's lives."
Sekgobela, 40, is a victim of domestic violence and has been abused for more than 20 years. She lived in a dilapidated house with her six children before the department came to her rescue.
Speaking during the handing over of the houses, MEC Maite Nkoana-Mashabane said shelter, restoration of dignity and worth, and bettering the lives of the poor, were the three pillars of her department's success.
The department was awarded the National Govan Mbeki Housing Award for being the best in terms of housing delivery in SA this year.
