Almost 11 years after escaping from Pretoria Central Prison Kalla Abdul Kafoor will return to South Africa from India on Saturday to face the music for allegedly manufacturing drugs.

Kafoor was arrested in Lichtenburg, North West, in 1996 but he escaped with five others, including heist kingpin Collen Chauke, in December 1997 after hijacking a car in the prison grounds.

Police Senior Superintendent Tummi Golding, who is also an Interpol spokeswoman, said an Interpol alert had been out for him since his escape.

He was arrested by India's Central Bureau of Intelligence (CBI) in October at Mumbai's Sahar Airport. According to the CBI, he was with another suspect, Jacob Philip, wanted in the US for dealing in various drugs.

Officials from both countries made arrangements for the extradition to take place.

Kafoor will be returned to South Africa after the justice ministry has sanctioned the extradition, Golding said.

Kafoor is expected to return on Saturday evening and the matter will then be dealt with by the Pretoria high court, which facilitated the extradition.

"We're happy," said Golding. "11years is a long time. There will be tight security." - Sapa
