The finalists of the 2008 Old Mutual, SABC and Sowetan Community Builder of the Year Award visited Sowetan's offices in Industria, Johannesburg, yesterday.

The finalists of the 2008 Old Mutual, SABC and Sowetan Community Builder of the Year Award visited Sowetan's offices in Industria, Johannesburg, yesterday.

They are senior category finalists Sikhonzi Gazu, Elizabeth Nkoenyana and Mary Mhlanga.

Adult category finalists: Sthembeni Vaughan-Williams, Irene Fitzi and Simone Aronje.

Youth section finalists: Matome Rakgoale, Sedrico Husselman and Bongani Diko.

Group category finalists: John Nxumalo, Caroline Mogoane and Jonathan Schrirer, who is represented by colleagues Freddy Jacobs, Elizabeth Everson, Natalie Freeman and Berenice Bougaard.

On Monday they toured the SABC's Auckland Park headquarters.

Last night they were treated to cabaret by Old Mutual at the posh Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton.

Tonight the four category winners, and the overall Community Builder of the Year, will be announced at a glittering ceremony at the Sandton Convention Centre.

The awards recognise, acknowledge and reward purposeful men and women who unselfishly give of their time and talent to improve the quality of life of other people in their communities.

The 12 finalists symbolise the cream of community development in South Africa, whose hard work shows the way and makes a huge difference in education, environmental awareness, health and social welfare, crime prevention, youth development, sports and recreation. - Victor Mecoamere.
