South Africa is facing a serious blood shortage this festive season.

South Africa is facing a serious blood shortage this festive season.

The situation is said to be worse than last year.

The country is currently running on 2000 units of blood A day instead of 3000 units. In a bid to overcome this setback the SA National Blood Services is appealing to all South Africans to donate blood.

Loyiso Mpuntsha, chief executive of the blood service, said the country was experiencing an increase in road accidents, while blood banks run low during the festive season.

"We rely on the public to donate blood before they go on holiday. We cannot save lives without the support of all South Africans," Mpuntsha said. - Zinhle Mapumulo
