Officers at Orlando police station in Soweto held an open day and march on Friday to thank the community for helping in the fight against crime.

The open day was also held to educate the residents about the different careers in the police service.

The officers also held a peace march through Orlando East.

Spokesman for the station, Captain Nomvula Mbense, said: "We are telling them about the different divisions in the SAPS and on how they can help us fight crime in our community. We also want young people to apply for jobs as police officers. So we are trying to show them the different opportunities that we offer.

"We are also playing sports with them to ensure that they get to know police in a friendly setting."

She cited the special task force, dog unit, national intervention unit and mounted unit as some of the sections that young people could be interested in.

Mbense said it was important for the police to show their appreciation to the community because the crime rate had gone down in the area.

She said the police station had managed to achieve this because of working closely with the community.
