Tongues are wagging after the yearly Metro FM Music Awards in Tshwane last weekend.
And no wonder.
Metro FM staffers were nominated and one of them, Unathi Nkayi, won a big prize.
"Metro FM is taking the people of South Africa for a ride," 999 boss Arthur Mafokate said.
Last month there was a chorus of disapproval when Nkayi, who won the award for Best Female Artist, was nominated.
Listeners complained that her album was released outside the September 23 deadline, but Metro FM station manager Segale Mogotsi said the album was released 30 days before the closing date.
There were also complaints about the nominations of DJs Fistaz, Mixwell and Glen Lewis. Many people also moaned about Nkayi competing in three categories.
Yesterday the general secretary of Creative Workers Union of South Africa, Oupa Lebogo, told Sowetan that his organisation was unhappy about the nomination of Metro FM DJs and that Nkayi had won.
Lebogo said it was unacceptable that the DJs agreed to be nominated for the awards in the first place.
"It is a clear conflict of interest. Unathi could have declined the nominations from the start.
"These awards must go to the right people who deserve them. There is no clear criteria as to how judges and Metro FM arrive at these decisions."
But Mogotsi defended his staff and said they were artists in their own right. He said the public had voted for Nkayi
"These are the only awards in South Africa that are voted by the public," Mogotsi said. "People don't understand what the awards are all about. I am very excited that one of our staffers has won an award."
