While the 16 days of Activism against Violence on Women and Children are under way, a Limpopo police captain found himself on the wrong side of the law.
The cop was arrested after he allegedly raped a 33-year-old woman in Polokwane.
The incident allegedly happened at the woman's flat in Hans van Rensburg Street in the Limpopo capital last Thursday.
Captain Joseph Shiluvane, 41, allegedly first approached the woman claiming that he was looking for a flat to rent. The woman is said to have offered to introduce Shiluvane to the landlord.
After agreeing on terms with the landlord, Shiluvane allegedly asked the woman to accompany him to an ATM to withdraw money to pay the rent.
During the trip he also bought two soft drinks, one of which he allegedly spiked and gave to the unsuspecting woman to drink.
Police spokesman Superintendent Mohale Ramatseba said the woman became dizzy shortly after drinking and asked to be taken back to her flat.
She woke up the next morning to find her underwear scattered all over in her bedroom.
"The woman went to the doctor who confirmed she had been raped," said Ramatseba.
He said the woman opened a case and Shiluvane was arrested. He was released on R1 000 bail in the Polokwane magistrate's court on Friday and the case was postponed to February 7 next year.
Shiluvane works in the SAPS supply chain management in Polokwane.
Ramatseba said internal disciplinary processes would be instituted against Shiluvane.
"The police are supposed to protect members of the public against any form of crime," Ramatseba said.
