African National Congress Youth League president Julius Malema has slammed ANC members who flaunt their newly acquired wealth, saying their behaviour is driving a wedge between the ruling party and the people.

Speaking to Sowetan at Esselen Park, where the ANC held its three-day election manifesto conference, Malema said some ANC cadres had acquired the taste for "dated liquor and expensive cars which they go and flaunt in the communities where they come from".

Showing off with new money doesn't help ANC

"People go to the township and boast about drinking imported, expensive liquor and the German sedans they drive. This is an insult to the people."

The showing off made people believe that the ANC cadres they elected to power are corrupt.

"What type of message are you sending when you change cars like you are changing shirts?"

Malema also supported the ANC's plan to expand the social welfare net.

"We do not want to create a welfare state but the plan is in line with the plan to create quality jobs."

The plan's critics claim that it is unaffordable and that the new government will have to go "cap in hand to the International Monetary Fund" to source funding for it.

Yesterday Malema said South Africa could use the budget surplus and also called for the establishment of a state-owned mining company so the state could generate revenue to fund the plan. See page 12
