A burst sewerage pipe in Zimbabwe has been identified as the main source of the current cholera outbreak.
The pipe was allegedly discovered on Wednesday afternoon after a lengthy search by officials of the Limpopo department of health and social development.
Provincial department spokesman Phuti Seloba confirmed yesterday that they had identified the source and the problem.
Seloba said officials had gone to Zimbabwe to do an assessment of how the disease came about when they made the discovery.
"After the discovery of the source and the problem that resulted in the outbreak of cholera in the province, we are now developing an action plan to come up with a permanent solution to the problem," Seloba said.
"We believe fixing the sewerage plant will go a long way to alleviating the problem," he said.
According to him more Zimbabwans were still crossing into South Africa daily to be treated for cholera.
By late yesterday departmental records indicated they had treated 244 people in Musina alone.
Of that number 50 had been admitted to the Messina Hospital.
Seloba said nine more patients had been admitted at the Donald Fraser Hospital, two at Polokwane and one each at the Letaba and Voortrekker hospitals.
