'WE WANT OUR CEO BACK NOW'

Staff at the Commission on Gender Equality want their suspended chief executive officer back and are withdrawing from investigations against her.

Chana Majake was suspended in April after staff wrote a memorandum complaining about her.

An investigation, led by Peter Harris, was instituted to investigate allegations that Majake had, among other things, "employed some of the staff members without following recognised organisational procedures and that she finalised a policy document and gazetted it without proper consultation with all CGE stakeholders and staff".

Sowetan is in possession of a letter from CGE staff addressed to Harris, in which they withdraw from taking part in the investigation.

In the letter they say: "When the acting chief executive officers presented their submission it became apparent that their evidence has nothing to do with the staff grievances contained in the staff memorandum.

"It was also the staff's understanding that the Harris commission was established solely to investigate allegations contained in the staff memorandum."

Last month the staff wrote a memorandum addressed to President Kgalema Motlanthe and Finance Minister Trevor Manuel, saying they had no confidence in the commission's chairman, Nomboniso Gasa.

In the letter they say: "The commission has suspended the CEO without having a plan in place to save the organisation that led to the appointment of two commissioners to act as CEOs in violation of the GCE Act."

In a response to the letter, Gasa said a decision had been taken to suspend "all fundraising processes embarked on by the chairperson of the CGE, including the withdrawal of funds that are already secured".
