The Mokoka Lamplight Foundation for the Blind was founded by Dolly Ntoko Mokoka in 1983.
"God called me to look after his people who are blind," she says.
The pensioner hosted Christmas parties for blind people in her neighbourhood by asking retailers in town for food and clothes.
Mokoka, who is affectionately called the mother of the blind, also looks after children.
Mama Angel gave the foundation 200 pairs of slippers donated by fashion retailer John Craig. Mokoka will distribute them at Christmas.
"I thank Mama Angel and John Craig. It is touching that the blind are remembered by caring people. God bless you and all your work.
"I used to buy dolls and sell them near banks to make extra money for the foundation. Gradually, my work spread to six provinces," Mokoka says.
She distributes food donated by the Taiwanese embassy every third week to communities in Sebokeng, Orange Farm, Soweto, Noordgesig and Katlehong.
The foundation has about 200 members. Mokoka funds her work with her pension grant.
She was a finalist in the Sowetan Community Builder for Gauteng.
"I want the government to give blind people homes. Most of them live in shacks. I have spoken to officials about giving us land in Noordgesig where they are building RDP homes. I pray to God that this will happen."
The foundation needs groceries, Braille books, athletics kits for blind runners and volunteers to teach Braille.
