Against the backdrop of particularly inflammatory banter among political parties in recent weeks, it is useful that the Independent Electoral Commission has warned leaders against utterances that might incite violence or hatred before and during next year's elections.

Of importance is to ensure that the election occurs in a climate free of intimidation and violence.

We hope political leaders will heed this warning - for the sake our democracy.
