The Department of Water Affairs has launched "Blitz Week" with a crackdown on farmers illegally taking water from the Crocodile River in Mpumalanga.

Water Affairs Minister Lindiwe Hendricks and her department's compliance unit, popularly known as the Blue Scorpions, raided a farm near Komatipoort on Monday, where the owner had diverted the river to irrigate his crops.

In a statement Hendricks said her officials had long pleaded with farmers to stop stealing water.

"We are beginning to crack down on those who are stealing water from our resources. Their offences vary from building unlicensed dams on their properties to taking water illegally from the rivers that flow near their properties. - Sapa
