The initiative by the SAPS to recruit and train 100 matriculants in forensic sciences for police work is far-sighted in more ways than one.

The initiative by the SAPS to recruit and train 100 matriculants in forensic sciences for police work is far-sighted in more ways than one.

On the one hand, it addresses a real need for the administration of justice by training a nucleus of experts who will use their skills to ensure that many more crime scenes are combed and important evidence gathered to maximise the chances of culprits being brought to book.

On the other hand, the SAPS gives an opportunity to the many gifted young people, who roam the streets without hope because they cannot afford tertiary education, with a real opportunity of acquiring a necessary skill. This is a model many other industries can copy.
