Masala Muofhe, 27, assaulted his wife, Rhendani Manngo, 24, on Saturday night, hacked their kids with a panga, then hanged himself from a tree.
A group of women ploughing in the fields found Muofhe's lifeless body on Sunday.
Police said Muofhe and Manngo had been arguing for a long time that night before tragedy struck in Gondeni village outside Thohoyandou.
Police spokesman Captain Mashudu Malelo said a fist fight erupted in the couple's house during a blazing row.
He said Muofhe s toned and assaulted Manngo "with his bare hands before she fled from the house into the night".
"Muofhe then allegedly produced a panga and hacked the children on their bodies and heads."
He said the children suffered serious injuries and were fighting for their lives in hospital.
