Sports lovers - particularly the soccer and rugby crowds - can now look forward to 2009 with a tinge of hope.

Sports lovers - particularly the soccer and rugby crowds - can now look forward to 2009 with a tinge of hope.

Barely a week ago they held their collective breadth as pessimists predicted the worst for our teams, Bafana Bafana and Amabhokobhoko. We were told that doom and gloom were about to hit us.

The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon were going to devour Bafana and the Springboks would fare no better against England.

For once though, Bafana coach Joel Santana seemed to remove his blinkers, leading his troops to a 3-2 win against Cameroon on Wednesday.

The Boks reaffirmed their status as world champs with a historic 42-6 thumping of England at Twickenham.

Bafana are not world beaters already but there is a ray of hope.
