Angry residents of Riverside village near Glen Cowie in Limpopo yesterday beat up a man to death and left another in a coma after they had allegedly stolen a bakkie.

The two were accused of stealing a bakkie belonging to a local resident.

The owner of the vehicle was asleep when he heard the sound of his bakkie. When he went outside to investigate he saw the vehicle being driven out of the yard.

Police spokesman Inspector Maboke Lediga said the incident happened around 4am. He said the owner shouted for help, prompting residents to chase the thieves.

"The villagers chased the bakkie until it got stuck near a valley at Riverside.

"The two were caught and beaten with sticks and sjamboks until one of them died."
