Fiery death for 2 Mai-Mais in DRC fighting

KIRUMBA - At least two people were killed in fighting between the army and pro-government Mai-Mai militia in the eastern DRC, an AFP journalist reported yesterday.

Two charred bodies were left on a dirt track in Kirumba, about 120km from Goma, capital of the volatile Nord Kivu province, after Tuesday's fighting.

"They are Mai-Mais who came to town and asked us to disarm. They were killed," a government soldier said. "They were burnt, we left them lying there without being buried because they are our enemies."

Kirumba was calm yesterday with government troops patrolling the town, the majority of whose residents had fled after the fighting.

"The situation is under control," an army officer said.

Renegade general Laurent Nkunda's troops were withdrawing from around two battle fronts northeast of Goma, which is still surrounded by Nkunda's National Congress for the Defence of the People.

The violence has forced thousands of people to flee to neighbouring countries. - Sapa-AFP
