The Labour Market Indaba research report, which was commissioned by the Department of Labour, revealed some disturbing remuneration and safety realities faced by many mine workers who work for big mining companies through contractors.
The research, which was conducted under the mentorship of Professor Edward Webster from the University of the Witwatersrand, found a contract worker employed by JIC Mining Services who earns R10,80 after deductions from a gross income of R1200.
