KwaZulu-Natal Premier S'bu Ndebele has assured residents of Molweni, near Hillcrest in Durban, that their houses destroyed by a storm will be rebuilt before Christmas.
The area was ravaged on Friday by a freak storm that left nine people dead, including two children, and 1000 families displaced.
Nine-year-old Sanele Hlongwane and Samkelisiwe Nzungu, 10, had just arrived home from school when their home collapsed. The storm, which lasted only 10 minutes, left people in disbelief.
Distraught mother Nokwenza said her "little angels" died when the house collapsed. She said it was hard to come to terms with their death.
She said she was still suffering but believed God knew why this had happened to her.
"My daughter was already dead when the rescue team found her and my son was alive but died a few minutes later," she said.
Neighbour Thembile Manci said: "I have never seen such a terrible thing in my life.
"We only see such things on television," she said. "Only God knows why this happened."
Manci said everything happened very quickly.
The provincial government declared it a disaster area after Ndebele, MEC for social development Meshack Radebe and other government officials visited the place.
Ndebele said the devastation caused by the storm was unbelievable. He assured res idents that their homes would be rebuilt and their lives restored .
The provincial government has formed a task team that will coordinate a shelter and food relief programme for destitute families.
