Motor sector sheds jobs

The National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa) said on Friday that industry employment levels declined marginally during the third quarter.

Data released on Friday showed that compared to the 36059 positions at the end of the second quarter of this year, aggregate industry employment declined by 373 jobs during the third quarter to 35686 jobs.

During the quarter, three companies increased headcount and two major employers reduced the number of employees, while employment at the industry's other major employers remained stable.

In its quarterly review of business conditions for the South African motor vehicle manufacturing industry for the third quarter of this year, as submitted to the director general of the Department of Trade and Industry, Naamsa noted that industry capacity utilisation levels continued to hold up relatively well as a result of growing export business. - I-Net Bridge
