Mass staff exodus at varsity

Since an investigation into the financial status of Mangosuthu University of Technology in Durban was launched in August, there have allegedly been mass resignations by staff .

Staff who have resigned have been asked to stay pending the outcome of the investigation. Since last year, there have allegedly been 40 resignations by lecturers and top managers.

Allegations abound that the varsity is bankrupt and that an audit has revealed that R1,67million could not be accounted for.

In August the university council asked vice-chancellor Aaron Ndlovu to step down to give way for an independent "assessment". This was sent to Education Minister Naledi Pandor for recommendations last week.

The student representative secretary, Brian Masondo, said if the allegations of mass staff resignations were true "the university would be in deep trouble because the shortage of lecturers is still a problem".
