After clinching Safa Soweto's Phillips Cup in Klipspruit last weekend, top amateur club Senaoane Gunners are now targeting the Discovery Walter Sisulu Challenge.
Club chairman, Mike "Nanana" Ntombela believes they are well on track to turn Mavarara into a successful academy for youngsters of Soweto.
The Walter Sisulu Challenge, an yearly tournament held in honour of the late ANC leader Walter Sisulu, will start next month with preliminary rounds.
Ntombela said: "We have laid a solid foundation to challenge for the Walter Sisulu Challenge cup, which is one of the biggest development competitions in Gauteng."
The former Wits University and Mamelodi Sundowns defender attributed the success of Mavarara to the good developmental structures their technical staff and management have set up.
"I'm proud of the successes of Gunners. We have produced youngsters like Thulani Hlatshwayo and Thulani Serero, who are playing for Ajax Cape Town.
"One of the things that we have been preaching to our players is consistency, they have been doing well in the league and other competitions in various age groups.
"We have instilled a winning mentality and they are now aware that Gunners is a big brand associated with winning.
"As part of their development we play regularly against academies of the premiership clubs.
"It is incredible that the boys who won the Phillips Cup are not our senior team, that was our Under-20s who included four boys who started with us 10 years ago," said Ntombela, who is also the technical director for Gunners.
The four boys are captain Hlubi Radebe, Yiyo Mutwa, Mzwandile Sigasa and Thabang Radebe.
Ntombela also commended the community of Senaoane for embracing Gunners, who also have two netball sides. For soccer, Gunners has Under-9s, 11s, 13s, 15s, 17s, 20s and the senior team.
