Derby was almost like a cup final

The doubting Thomases who believed that the Soweto derby had lost its spark were made to eat humble pie by the two football giants.

The game at Mmabatho Stadium in Mafikeng between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs lived up to expectations because it was a thriller and both sides produced their best.

Although Chiefs, who were favourites, were caught off guard by two quick goals, the Naturena side never sat back. They fought gallantly, but the Bucs were just too good on the day.

The day's performance was a clear indication that pride was at stake.

There was no dull moment as both went for each other hammer and tongs with renewed determination. The game was reminiscent of a cup final.

It was a real derby. Every player on the pitch showed commitment and dedication to the game and to his respective team.

Fans came in large numbers and although the stadium was not filled to capacity, there was excitement in the air before, during and after the game.

It was an afternoon of excitement for many soccer lovers and AmaKhosi, despite being defeated, took it in good spirit.

There were some celebrations afterwards and Chiefs and Pirates supporters could be seen mingling as they teased each other and argued about the game.

But that was done in good spirit.

The game was flowing much to the delight of the fans and there were no major incidents during the proceedings.

Even the Chiefs coach Muhsin Ertugral admitted that Pirates were the better of the two, but all in all the two sides played entertaining football from the opening right up to the final whistle.

Everybody was happy because even the security was water-tight and nothing unbecoming was reported. Those who lost their belongings during the game were called through a loudspeaker to come over and collect them.

The spectators were well behaved, and I would like to command them. The security personnel were all around the stadium, but did not have much to do.
