SA, stand up to Mugabe

Robert Mugabe is entirely to blame for the Zimbabwean crisis and he is not committed to the unity deal.

Robert Mugabe is entirely to blame for the Zimbabwean crisis and he is not committed to the unity deal.

To give him a position in government is an insult to Zimbabweans who overwhelmingly rejected him. Were it not for Simba Makoni, who threw himself into the election to save him, it would have been a total disaster for Mugabe.

South Africa must take a tougher stance against Mugabe, not on Morgan Tsvangirai. Mugabe unilaterally gazetted cabinet posts for Zanu-PF, though he lost on March 29.

He holds Zimbabweans to ransom. He did not give Morgan Tsvangirai a passport to attend the Mbabane summit as was his right.

The Kgalema Motlanthe administration must stand up to him. The situation he has created is not good for the region nor for South Africa, which in less than 700 days will host the biggest soccer showcase, in particular.

Mugabe wants the finance and economic development, home affairs and agriculture portfolios, but he destroyed the economy, does not have good relations with most nations, does not uphold the rule of law and pursues policies that ensure that no food is produced.

Zimbabwe needs policies that will bring back prosperity, positive change and economic growth.

Motlanthe, beef up your impeccable credentials. Do not embrace a dictator.
