Thabiso Lebona thought the certificate he secured through a Sasol sponsorship would get him a job with the petroleum giant.
Unfortunately the certificate is not worth the paper it is written on.
Lebona, pictured, and his colleagues, who are studying to be artisans at the Sedibeng Training Centre in the Vaal, discovered that they were assessed for subjects they did not even register for.
Lebona said: "I received a certificate for level two and when I saw the assessment forms, I was assessed for 10 subjects that I did not even register for.
"This year, when I was supposed to be given my level three certificate, I did not get it and was told I was not yet competent in one subject I had registered for. Amazingly enough, I am competent for three subjects I have not registered for."
Sowetan is in possession of the students' assessment forms signed by the Chemical Industries Education and Training Authority (Chieta) seta.
The students and representatives from Sasol and Chieta met last week to discuss the issue.
Chieta accreditation officer Stuurman Apane said a full audit would be undertaken to establish the facts.
Sasol's Thabo Borole said: "I am unaware of the claims and I would appreciate it if you forwarded the forms to me."
