As a result of the bravery of one woman who went public about the two-day rape ordeal she suffered at the hands of an imposter claiming to be soccer star Thabiso "Skappie" Malatsi, 15 more women have approached the police with the same story.
Police are now looking for a serial rapist and believe there could be more women who have not yet come forward.
"We urge all women who have fallen victim to the same man to come forward," said Gauteng police spokesman Inspector Sanku Tsunke.
Sowetan reported on Wednesday that the hoodlum allegedly drugged and raped a 29-year-old woman before making off with her BMW 1 Series.
Tsunke said yesterday: "We are getting an overwhelming response from the public. We have received calls from people who claim to have fallen victim to this guy and those who know his whereabouts. We are following up on several leads, thanks to Sowetan."
Sowetan reported that the hoodlum had invited Maria (not her real name) on a date. She said they first met at Clearwater Mall in Roodepoort and she gave him her cellphone numbers.
"He told me that he played for Kaizer Chiefs and Ria Stars. Everything he said sounded so convincing. The next day he called, saying we should meet at McDonald's at Hillfox," she said.
Maria explained that they sat in the restaurant's parking lot inside his green VW microbus.
After winning the woman's heart he walked into McDonald's restaurant and returned with a spiked strawberry milkshake.
The married mother of a four-year-old daughter woke up two days later with her car, cellphone and laptop missing.
"I think my not keeping silent about this has helped a lot of other women," she said.
Maria, who is being monitored for a possible HIV infection, said she would become an Aids activist if she was infected. Anyone with information should contact Constable Mokateko Ndobe on 083-969-6377.
