Cosatu has launched a new project that will focus on making sure that the lives of poor and working people is improved, the labour federation announced yesterday.

The project has been named Walking Through the Open Doors.

The decision to get the project going was taken at Cosatu's central executive committee in May.

According to federation general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi the project was undertaken to ensure that resolutions taken at the ANC's Polokwane conference were prioritised.

He said the economy had grown but the poor and workers had not benefited at all.

"If you look at our economy in the past 10 years it has grown tremendously but has benefited only a few capitalists," Vavi said.

"We have a huge crisis. About 35 to 40percent of our people are unemployed.

"We have a huge and growing crisis of poverty and inequality," - Sapa
