Mama Angel brightened the faces of Jordan House residents by providing them with groceries.

Jordan House is a frail care institution for the elderly in Westbury that caters for 74 frail care patients and 18 who are still independent. It was established in 1927 by the Methodist Church but accepts pensioners from all denominations.

The home takes in all races and receives a subsidy from the Department of Welfare and Social Development. The subsidy has been drastically reduced which has forced the home to solicit help from the community.

The home desperately needs perishables, toiletries and cleaning products. Its minibus was stolen four months ago and staff battle to take the residents to hospitals and clinics for medical attention.

Occasional outings that were arranged for the pensioners have been curtailed because of the theft.

The home is also in need of handymen who can volunteer to fix running repairs. They appealed to plumbers, electricians, painters and tilers to come to their aid.

Jordan House needs funds to renovate its bathrooms, ceilings, curtain rails and lockers. The buildings also need to be painted.

Pearlene Meadows, the director of Jordan House, was almost in tears when Sowetan delivered the goods to her.

"We appreciate all donations that enable us to continue ministering to our residents. We are privileged to serve them.

"Thank you so much for this wonderful effort. We rely on the resources of the community, through God's help, to carry on our task," said Meadows.

The residents also raise funds by knitting knee blankets and bed socks.
