Pupils at the Mogale Primary School in Mamelodi have a sparkle in their eyes after their school was given a facelift sponsored by the Menlyn Park Shopping Centre.
The project started two months ago with service providers at the shopping centre revamping the school.
Classrooms and bathrooms were painted, plumbing fixed and electrical work repaired.
Cleaners at the school were also offered training by some of the companies that provide cleaning services at the Old Mutualowned shopping centre.
The revamp of the school is expected to be completed by the end of next month.
Mogale Primary School has 1287 pupils crammed into 24 classrooms.
About 85 percent of the pupils rely on the government feeding scheme, which provides them with one meal a day.
Most of the pupils are from the Phomolong informal settlement in the township east of Pretoria.
Menlyn Park Shopping Centre is situated about 27km from the school.
"As the biggest shopping centre in the city, Menlyn Park is committed to social upliftment and community outreach programmes," said Olive Ndebele, Old Mutual's portfolio manager for Pretoria East.
Despite the unfortunate circumstances of most of the pupils, Mogale Primary still excels in various sports activities, with four pupils having been selected to represent Gauteng in cricket recently.
"The facelift means a lot to our pupils," said Molahlehi Molopo, the school's deputy principal.
