Well spent

Economists often bicker about the utility of social grants, but no one should whinge over the R500million just allocated to emergency relief.

This money is available only as short-term succour for the poorest of the poor who fall on hard times. And, as economies disintegrate around us ever more, South Africans need this help.

Sure this money ultimately comes out the pockets of tax-paying South Africans, many highly indebted and themselves facing hard times.

But better we give it to the most needy, who will immediately recycle it through our flagging economy, than subsidise some business sort, who is likely to spend it overseas on needless luxuries.

This is a social security net that benefits us all.
