KINSHASA - The UN has accused government forces of widespread looting and human rights abuses in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

"Soldiers of the Armed Forces of DR Congo have been engaged in looting and acts of brutality against the civilian population in the Kanyabayonga area, 175km north of Goma," Monuc spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Jean-Paul Dietrich said yesterday.

Violence against civilians had spread to Kaina and Kirumba, and was continuing, Dietrich said.

The three towns are strategically located in NordKivu region. - Sapa-AFP
