Christmas has come early for Elizabeth Masondo, 54, of Blaaubosch in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal.
Masondo has been confined to her iron bed since 1991 after a car accident left her paralysed.
However, at the weekend she was visited by IFP leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi, who was conducting a door-to-door campaign in the area encouraging people to register to vote.
Buthelezi promised her a brand-new wheelchair in less than four days. Yesterday, IFP local chairman Erickson Zungu officially handed the wheelchair to Masondo.
Masondo told Sowetan that she did not really believe it when Buthelezi promised her a wheelchair.
"I'm very happy. God has heard my prayers. I will now be able to help myself. I'm unemployed and my two children also have no jobs. They sometimes get temporary work to pay for their school fees and buy us food," she said.
Masondo, like most rural women, is forced to support her children with a state child support grant.
"I feel blessed. I want to say thank you my brother (Buthelezi) for this chair. I will now move around without asking for help."
Zungu said: "Our president was shocked and touched after seeing the elderly woman in such a terrible situation. He promised to buy her a wheelchair, and he did."
