The second week of end-of-year matric exams started yesterday, with candidates writing the mathematics second paper.

So far, the exams have been running smoothly.

Candidates at Selelekela Secondary School in Orlando East, Soweto, said the paper was "as easy as pie".

They said they were optimistic they would get good marks. Mathematics and life orientation are two of the compulsory subjects in the new curriculum statement. Grade 12 pupils have to do do either maths or maths literacy. They also have to enrol for five other subjects.

Bongani Cele said: "The paper was hard but I wrote well. I will at least get 57 percent."

Jabulani Myeze, who wrote maths literacy, said: "I wrote well and will get at least 70 percent."

"The exam was nice and passable. I am sure that I will do well," said Duduzile Khumalo.

Thato Majoro, who wrote the maths paper, said: "The paper was a bit long but simple. I am confident that I will pass."
