"She ran to me upstairs, bleeding profusely, to wake me up so that I could get help for her baby who was lying motionless and also bleeding on the bed, but it was too late."
These were the emotional words of Sakane Molokoane, 66, who witnessed her daughter and granddaughter's horrific deaths on Saturday morning in Orange Farm.
Five-month-old Busi and her mother Elizabeth Maki Laqhike, 38, were allegedly brutally stabbed by her boyfriend, who is also the father of the baby.
The alleged attacker robbed Elizabeth of cash and a bank card before fleeing. In his haste to get away he dropped his cellphone, which has been handed over to the police.
"Her chest was covered in blood," Sakane said. "When I ran outside to get help she followed me and said it was too late - and that her baby was gone.
"She collapsed and died near the kitchen door."
Relatives gathered at the house yesterday, trying to understand what went wrong.
The grieving family said the latest deaths were too much because Elizabeth, while pregnant with Busi, buried her 17-year-old son Lebohang eight months ago.
He was hacked to death with a shovel he was carrying at the Avalon Cemetery.
The matric pupil had gone to clean his father's grave but never returned home.
His body was found a week later at a mortuary.
The family told how Elizabeth's boyfriend had ill-treated her.
"He was very abusive and she had decided to end the relationship," Elizabeth's sister Matlakala Masale said.
"He told our uncle that he would kill her and her child if she left him."
She said that the boyfriend had once tried to kill Busi by strangling her when she was three months old but Elizabeth's siblings came to the baby's rescue.
The police have launched a manhunt for the suspect.
