President Kgalema Motlanthe says a culture of saving should be nurtured among workers under the present tough economic conditions.

He was quick to add that workers had "to be paid decent wages" to enable them to save.

Motlanthe, above, who was speaking at the congress of the Federation of Unions of South Africa in Boksburg yesterday, cautioned workers to avoid the debt trap.

"We should save and desist from rampant borrowing, which leads to disaster."

Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi called for unity among federations to fight for workers' rights.
