Listening to Baack Obama and John McCain's speak after the historic US election on Tuesday, l was very impressed by the maturity of both leaders.

McCain sincerely conceded defeat and emphasised the need for unity and prosperity for all Americans. He wished his opponent well.

Obama praised McCain for a tireless contest. He also expressed willingness to work with his opponent.

It reminded me of former president FW de Klerk when he handed over the reins to Nelson Mandela in 1994.

There was a high level of tolerance among these moral leaders who respected and valued the people they led despite their political affinity.

Juxtapose them with some of today's leaders and one can draw extreme dichotomies.

Words such as dogs and snakes are used for people with opposing views by leaders who should promote morality and good social values.
