With the festive season just around the corner, the Johannesburg Metro Police Department has launched a new testing station aimed at stopping drunk drivers in their tracks.
The centre will be used to conduct alcohol tests on drunken drivers without the need for taking blood samples.
The centre will be equipped with the innovative Drager machine which has has been approved through enabling legislation.
The breath-alcohol results will be released in a print-out and on the spot. The results from the centre will be sufficient to convict a drunken driver.
"The new centre will have eight Drager machines which cost R78000 each, as well as 40 portable alcohol meters that will be used by officers to screen drunken drivers," said Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.
The time taken to test a driver will be quicker, which means more drunken motorists will be arrested this festive season
