Reader wins R100000 shopping spree prize

Last week, we hosted the first of the yearly Times and Sowetan Retail Awards to acknowledge SA's best brands.

Last week, we hosted the first of the yearly Times and Sowetan Retail Awards to acknowledge SA's best brands.

Eighty-seven brands scored points with readers for quality, value for money and usage.

The ceremony was the finale to the recently launched Clever Shopper pages in both titles.

Respondents had to rate retailers in 29 categories from baby stores to vehicle accessory stores using the six criteria, ranging from awareness to service. At the end, South Africa's best retailers were singled out.

Fiona Coyne, host of The Weakest Link, designer Thula Sindi and Isidingo's Kim Engelbrecht were among the celebrities who attended the ceremony.

But the envy of the night was the winner of the R100000 shopping spree, Thulani Sibiya.

"I'm not sure what I'm going to buy," Sibiya said. "I live with my mother, so I have to consult her first before I make any decisions."

The good news is that the end of the competition does not mean the end of the Clever Shopper pages. The pages will continue to be a regular feature in the paper, all thanks to the readers' positive response.

Some of the winners on the night were not a surprise, like the Baby and Child stores winner Ackermans and the department store winner Game.

A surprise winner in the Mall category, however, was Menlyn Mall, in Pretoria.

I fancied would have thought that Sandton City, which actually took the fifth position, would have won the category.

Eastgate Mall, East Rand Mall and the new Maponya Mall were actually all ahead of Sandton City Mall.

Some shops, such as Edgars, Woolworths, Game and Pick n Pay, had more luck as they walked away with multiple awards.

The other winners included Absa, Dream Nails, Toyota, South African Airways, eBucks, Levi's Store, Claire's, Kentucky Fried Chicken and BP Express.

A night of fun and glamour was made more memorable by the entertainment provided by the dynamic group Three Tons of Fun of Madame Zingara fame.

I can't wait for next year's ceremony.
