Open-hearted Maggie dies

A Soweto woman who made her house a home for former Robben Island prisoners has died.

Maggie Dibisiwe Madondo, 88, died of after a short illness.

She was born in Amershof in Mpumalanga and was married to the late Otto Yende who died in 1949.

She travelled to Johannesburg to look for work and met Gilbert Madondo, a founder member of Imbube Group, Evening Birds.

One of the activists she housed after his release from prison was Sathane Khumalo.

The funeral service will be held at her home at 389 Mofolo South from 9am on Saturday.

The cortege will leave for Avalon Cemetery at 12. - Sowetan reporter
