The South African Passengers Organisation in Mpumalanga has decided to raise funds to help the families of passengers who died in a bus accident early this year.
The organisations chairman Veli Mathe told Sowetan that no assistance had been offered to the families after the accident in March.
"Government officials spoke about helping the families since some of the 12 people who died were breadwinners," Mathe said.
"We have decided to open a trust account to financially assist these families."
Mathe accused the bus owners of failing to take the plight of affected people into consideration.
"The families say they have heard nothing from the bus company since its lawyers took statements from them shortly after the accident," Mathe said.
Twelve people died and several were injured when the driver lost control of the bus on the R40 road between Nelspruit and White River on March 5.
Irene Mwali, 41, of Mcobanini Trust, said her husband, who was the family's breadwinner, died in the accident.
"Nothing happened afterwards," said Mwali, who has three children aged one, a and 17. "We don't have the means and the lawyers told us nothing could be done to compensate us."
