A man whose tongue was bitten off during an alleged attempted rape appeared briefly in the Mmabatho magistrate's court yesterday.

Lebogang Mogami, 35, of Motlhabeng village near Mmabatho, was arrested after police found him shortly after the attempted rape last Thursday. He had allegedly tried to force himself onto a 54-year-old shebeen queen.

According to Mmabatho police spokesman Captain Sabata Mokgwabone, on the day of the alleged crime Mogami went to the shebeen.

"The woman opened the door thinking he was a customer," Mokgwabone said.

When Mogami realised that he was alone with the woman, he demanded sex from her.

When she refused, police allege that he forced her into a bedroom and tried to rape her.

He thought the woman had relented and asked for a kiss but she bit off a huge chunk of his tongue when he tried to kiss her.

The police officers who were patrolling the area were attracted to the scene by his screams and the angry woman hurling insults at him.

They found Mogami soaked in blood.

A piece of his tongue was on the ground.

The woman was unharmed but a little shaken, according to the police.

Mogami was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

During his appearance yesterday, magistrate Pious Langa postponed the case to December 4 and set bail at R800.

Mokgwabone said Mogami was within his rights to lay a counter charge of assault against the woman.

It was yesterday not clear if he will lay charges.
