The wife of the former mayor of Sedibeng district municipality, Mlungisi Hlongwane, has stepped down from the ANC election committee in the Vaal.

Greta Hlongwane told Sowetan that she quit the strategic position after her husband Mlungisi resigned from the ANC at the weekend to join the national convention called by former ANC chairman Mosiuoa Lekota.

"After he decided to join the convention I saw it necessary for me to resign as the ANC's election coordinator in the Vaal. I did not want people to accuse me of sabotaging the elections because my husband was no longer a member of the party," she said.

Being a member of the committee would have pitted Greta against her husband.

Yesterday, Hlongwane said he would lead the election campaign in the Vaal for the soon-to-be launched South African Democratic Congress (Sadec) led by Lekota.

He told Sowetan that he intended pulling members of the South African National Civics Organisation (Sanco) into the new party.

"Today violence and intimidation are institutionalised in the ANC. The party is fundamentally led on the basis of factionalism. You are guaranteed not to face disciplinary actions irrespective of the amount of misconduct within the ANC if you belong to the Polokwane victors," said Hlongwane.

Greta, who is the speaker of Emfuleni municipality, said she respected her husband's decision and that Hlongwane also respected hers.

"I am not planning to leave the ANC. I will remain a loyal and dedicated member of the organisation, which I joined freely and voluntarily," she said.

She has been replaced by Gauteng department of housing spokesman Aviva Manqa.

ANC regional chairman Simon Mofokeng confirmed Greta's resignation.
