Late penalty saves Reds

Steven Gerrard scored a controversial penalty deep into injury time to earn Liverpool a 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid in Champions League Group D match last night.

Steven Gerrard scored a controversial penalty deep into injury time to earn Liverpool a 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid in Champions League Group D match last night.

The Liverpool captain converted from the spot after he was challenged in the box and Swedish referee, Martin Hansson, awarded a debatable penalty kick.

The Spanish side had thought Maxi Rodriguez's superbly taken 37th minute strike was enough to book their place in the knockout stages of the competition.

Both teams, who are five points clear at the top of the group, must now wait for their next games to confirm their progression to the next round.

Elsewhere, Marseille secured their first points in this season's Champions League by crushing PSV Eindhoven 3-0.

Ivory Coast striker Bakari Kone opened the scoring half an hour into the clash. He was also involved in Marseille's second goal, sending a cross that Senegal striker Mamadou Niang volleyed home from close range just after the hour. Niang was on target again for the third goal on 71 minutes.

Other results: Panathinaikos 3, Bremen 0; Barcelona 1, Basel 1; AS Roma 3, Chelsea 1; Sporting 1, Donetsk 0; Bordeaux 2, CFR Cluj 1; Anorthosis 3, Inter Milan 3.
