A Kwenchers Family Pub employee yesterday appeared briefly in the Durban magistrate's court in connection with the killing of one of the pub's regular patrons, Sithembiso Ciya.
The appearance of Christopher Bache, 35, lasted barely five minutes. He was charged with murder and remanded in police custody.
"Bache has agreed to help detectives track down two remaining suspects," said police spokesman Jay Naicker.
Ciya, pictured, died in hospital after he and his friend were beaten up by pub employees, in what his family and some patrons regard as a "racist" attack.
Ciya, 24, died within hours of the assault eight days ago.
He was buried on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Ciya family, still unable to come to terms with the death of their son, say they are making plans to leave the area.
The deceased's mother, Nomusa Ciya, said: "When I go past the pub my tears won't stop flowing. I looked into the house this morning, and realised that one of my children was no longer there.
"My home is no longer the same and I'm planning to leave this area."
Ciya, who was a taxi driver, was the breadwinner in the family.
Racial tensions remain high in the Sea View area after the incident.
Local ANC chairman Siboniso Makhaye said the killing of Ciya has angered many people.
"We have established that some pubs in the area do not want black patrons on their premises," Makhaye said.
"Racial attacks at pubs in the area are common."
