A lovers' quarrel ended tragically when a man stabbed his ex-girlfriend several times before shooting her dead and then turned the gun on himself.

The incident happened at the woman's house in Zone 3 in Seshego, near Polokwane, on Sunday evening.

Sergeant Mothemane Malefo, said the two had quarrelled before the incident.

He identified the dead man as Sydney Mathebula, 27, and his ex-girlfriend as Abigail Sibanda, 25, who came from Musina.

The woman, Malefo said, had reportedly ended their affair but the man refused to accept this.

A source close to the couple said Mathebula, who resided in Zone 8, sent Sibanda an SMS saying he would visit her to discuss their relationship.

The woman was in the company of her new boyfriend at the time she received the SMS.

She asked her new boyfriend to leave her place for a while so that she could hear her ex-boyfriend out. But the two former lovers failed to agree.

"The man did not approve of the fact that the affair had come to an abrupt end," said the source.

He said Mathebula then stabbed Sibanda in the body several times while she tried to defend herself.

"The man surprisingly drew a gun despite the fact that the woman was bleeding profusely."

The wounded woman grabbed the gun and managed to throw it out of the window, the source said.

Mathebula later unlocked the room and went to fetch the gun. He then shot Sibanda at point-blank range.

Realising she was dead, he shot himself in the head and died instantly.
