A detemined Ajax Cape Town fought hard to beat log leaders Supersport United 1-0 in a Absa Premiership encounter at Athlone Stadium in Cape Town on Saturday evening.

Their elated coach, Craig Roslee, praised his charges for a splendid perfomance and told Sowetan that "our victory restored my players' confidence after losing 2-0 to AmaZulu in Durban mid-week.

"I told them to close United down quickly and also warned my defenders to check their strikers led by Katlego Mashego. They listened and managed to win," said an upbeat Roslee.

His counterpart, Gavin Hunt, though disppointed was still optimistic that his players would bounce back.

"We should have beaten Ajax tonight (Saturday), but we were unlucky as we failed to find the net. We also gave them too much room but we came back strongly towards the end though their defence remained solid." said Hunt before lamenting the number of fluffed chances his lads had.

The first went to Mashego in the third minute who failed to chip the ball over Ajax keeper, Sean Roberts after a pass from Hlompo Kekana.

However, co-striker, Fikru Lemasse Tefera squandered three good chances - 82nd and 87th minutes as well as in referee's optional time.

While the Urban Warriors kept on attacking forcing their opponents to fall back and defend most of the time, luck wasn't on their side. In the 34th minute Sifiso Vilakazi saw his shot blocked by the visitors' keeper André Arendse following a great Mfundo Shumana pass.

But in the 51st minute, Mabhuti Khenyeza brought smiles to his bench with his classic header finding the net from a corner by Brett Evans to seal the game in favour of Ajax.
