Lungisani Ntuli, pictured, the winner of gospel talent search show I want to Sing Gospel, received a hero's welcome when he arrived in Inanda, outside Durban, yesterday.
Ntuli, 25, won R100 000 and a singing contract with Lindelani Mkhize Entertainment after South Africans voted him the winner last Sunday.
He said he would use the money to renovate and expand his family's three-roomed house.
Before setting his foot home, Ntuli went to Mtshebheni police station, where he worked as a cleaner before entering the competition that has turned him into a star.
At the station Ntuli jokingly said he was officially handing over the mop and broom that he had been using to support his family.
