Four prisoners escaped from the holding cells of a police station in Mpumalanga by sawing through the bars at the weekend.

The men, who had been arrested for armed robbery, hijacking and attempted murder, escaped from the holding cells at Siyabuswa police station on Saturday evening.

Superintendent Abie Khoabane said the escape occurred between 6.30pm and 7pm.

He identified the escapees as Levis Mohlala, 33, arrested for armed robbery, housebreaking and theft; Calvin Sibiya, 30, arrested for armed robbery and attempted murder; and Enoch Mabena, 22, and Welcome Mlambo for hijacking.

Khoabane said the escapees first damaged the holding cell door and gained access to the courtyard where they sawed through the bars and fled.

He warned the public not to confront the men as they were regarded as dangerous.

He urged the public to report the suspects' whereabouts to the nearest police station or contact Superintendent Ernest Maoka on 082-318-9843.
