Mpumalanga police have arrested a 29-year-old drug addict who tried to extort cash from her mother to buy drugs by claiming that she had been kidnapped.

The woman, who had overdosed by the time police found her, was arrested with three drug dealers at the Evander taxi rank at the weekend and admitted to hospital.

She confessed that she had not been kidnapped.

Captain Leonard Hlathi said police traced the phone number to the Evander taxi rank and closed the rank to search for the culprits.

"The woman had taken an overdose of an unknown drug and had passed out."

They arrested six men, who were later released, and also found the phone.

"Police arrested three more suspects in possession of heroin, cat, moon rocks and crack worth R6000," Hlathi said.
